‘Love-seeking’ black gunman found guilty of attempted murder A Baltimore man who claimed that he was in the city just “looking for love on Facebook’’ when he opened fire on a crowd of people in Brooklyn in 2014, striking three, was convicted Monday of attempted murder. Cush Wright-El, 27, now faces up to 75 years behind bars. Wright-El represented himself at trial and insisted he was framed and nowhere near the October shooting that injured a 57-year-old man, his 16-year-old nephew and a 61-year-old woman. But prosecutors didn’t buy it and reminded jurors throughout the proceedings that a gun was found in Wright-El’s jacket and he was wearing the same coat and sneakers as the gunman seen in security footage. Wright-El was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment. He is set to be sentenced May 10. |

Philly.com reports the civil rights claims filed by the family of Brandon Tate-Brown were allowed to move forward on Monday, despite several counts being thrown out. U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell denied a request from Tate-Brown's mother to turn the case into a class-action lawsuit. Tate-Brown was stopped Dec. 15, 2014 by Officers Nicholas Carrelli and Heng Dangon Frankford Avenue. Police say Tate-Brown had a semiautomatic pistol in his car and a struggle ensued, which ended with Tate-Brown being shot to death. |

Pictures released of two black suspects in connection with stabbing of 75-year-old (White) cancer patient BOSTON —Police have released pictures of the people they say may have information about the stabbing a 75-year-old Roxbury man walking home from a store earlier this week. The attack happened on Burrell Street at about 8 p.m. Tuesday. Police released pictures of two people -- a man and a woman -- who they say are wanted in connection with the attack. "Why, why, why do they want to do that to him? He's the friendliest person you ever want to meet really," the victim's sister, Norma Thornton, asked. Family members said James Barton, who is being treated for cancer, was walking home from the neighborhood store after buying scratch tickets when someone tried to rob him. "It's very sad. He's an old guy and he's walking very slowly with a cane. He's walking very slow," store owner Mamen Rashid said. The retired grandfather was able to make it back to his sister's home, who called 911. "I couldn’t think, I said what the heck is going on," Thornton said. Barton tried to fight off the attackers with his cane, his family said. Barton is in stable condition at Boston Medical Center. He's had one surgery, and may have to undergo another one, his family said. "He's strong. He's a strong guy. Praying for him that everything goes all right," Thornton said. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Man charged in 2010 Saginaw homicide of (White woman) Taylor Poling SAGINAW, MI — Prosecutors have issued charges in a 2010 cold case homicide on Saginaw's East Side. Tyrill L. Wade faces an open count of murder and three firearm offenses in the Dec. 7, 2010, shooting death of Taylor Poling. Prosecutors issued the charges Friday, April 29. Wade, 30, has been in prison since 2011 but is scheduled for release Tuesday, said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Boyd. "We've been looking at this for a while," he said. "Through a diligent effort from the Major Crimes Unit, they were able to bring us enough evidence that we were able to authorize the charges (Friday) before he was released." Boyd declined to comment on the specifics of the case pending Wade's future court hearings. It was not clear if a judge will arraign Wade via video conferencing from prison or if authorities will bring him to Saginaw on Tuesday. Police have said Poling's boyfriend about 8:30 p.m. discovered her shot inside her one-bedroom rental apartment at 446 S. 10th near Burt. Doctors pronounced her dead about two hours later. Poling, a 20-year-old Saginaw Intermediate School District Transition Center post-secondary student, had recently moved to the home, according to neighbors. - (Black-on-white) |
