1 pleads guilty to perjury in Battaglia death GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — One of three people charged with perjury in connection to a 1990 homicide has pleaded guilty. During a Monday status conference, Sheila Reed pleaded guilty as charged to perjury while under an investigative subpoena, according to Kent County Judge Mark Trusock’s office. Reed, 57, of Grand Rapids was charged with perjury in connection to the 1990 robbery and beating death of 23-year-old Joel Battaglia in Grand Rapids. His murder remained unsolved until late last year, when four people were arrested in the case. Aurelias Marshall was charged with the homicide, and Reed and two others with perjury. Marshall was convicted of murder earlier this month. Authorities also now say they think Marshall framed another man for sexually assaulting his then-girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter in 1991. The Kent County prosecutor has filed a motion to vacate Quentin Carter’s conviction in that case. Malcolm Jeffries and Aurelias Marshall’s brother Acey Marshall, both of whom also face perjury charges, were also scheduled for status conferences Monday. - (Black-on-white) |

(White) Teen was hunting lost phone when shot dead (by three blacks) LONDON, Ont. — Police are searching for three suspects after Jeremy Cook, 18, who recently moved to the city to pursue a carpentry career was gunned down in a parking lot Sunday while trying to track down his lost cellphone. He had never been in trouble with the law in London and didn’t know his killers, police said. So far the investigation shows Cook accidentally left his cellphone in a taxi earlier that morning or the previous night. He used a device to track the phone to an address, police said. Cook and a relative went there and approached a silver Mazda sedan with three men in it at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday. The men inside weren't giving the phone back to Cook, police said. During the confrontation over the phone, one man jumped out of the car and walked away and the driver stepped on the gas. Cook grabbed the driver's door and held onto the car as it peeled away out of the parking lot. Police responded to the reports of gunshots and found Cook bleeding behind a plaza. He died at the scene. The Mazda smashed into a fence and hydro pole and police found it abandoned. "It's very tragic that an incident involving a lost phone resulted in the loss of a life," Steeves said. - (Black-on-white) - (Canada) |

(Black) Caregiver indicted for elder neglect in death of (White) north Forsyth woman, 81 FORSYTH COUNTY — A caregiver has been indicted on charges of elder neglect after the Forsyth County woman in her care died. According to the indictment from Forsyth County Superior Court, Ileane Leverne Madison faces one count of neglect to an elder person and one count of exploitation and intimidation of elder persons. Court records show Madison has been accused of purposefully depriving Sara Francis Cash, who was 81 at the time, of care to the extent that her health and well-being were jeopardized. According to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s report, Cash was found in her room on July 7, 2014, covered in “deep black and purple bruises all over her body.” Reports that Madison had pushed Cash down have not been substantiated, said Robin Regan, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, and are evidenced by lack of a homicide charge. “Her autopsy showed injuries from a fall played a part in the cause of death, but the actual cause was undetermined ultimately,” Regan said. - (Black-on-white) |

(White) Girlfriend of black footballer recants abuse story, says prosecution is racist in domestic violence case The girlfriend of Arizona State University’s five-star football recruit claimed the prosecution of Davon Durant on charges of domestic violence is influenced by race and misogyny Tuesday. Kelsi Langley, 19, originally told Tempe Police that Durant hit her and tried to strangle her after witnesses called police and reported seeing a man beating a girl inside a car. But, Langley recanted her story to Tempe Police shortly after Durant was arrested. She was joined at a press conference Tuesday by civil rights activist Jarrett Maupin, who called for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to reconsider its prosecution of Durant. “There have been attempts by law enforcement and others to paint this as another situation where you have a black athlete who is aggressive, overly aggressive, and overly sexual.” Tempe Police said they have physical evidence in the case, including photos of her injuries, as well as eye witnesses. Domestic violence victims often change their stories. Victim advocates agree. - (Black-on-white) |

Elderly man nearly dies in unprovoked attack by cowardly thug An elderly man says he almost did not survive an unprovoked attack that was caught on video. Police are offering up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. It happened May 14, but it has taken this long because the victim only recently got out of the hospital and was healthy enough to talk police. Surveillance video show 67-year-old Steven Wall standing outside a store when he gets punched in the face. The impact knocked him right off his feet. Wall said he turned around to look at his attacker just before the blow when the attacker threw a phone on the ground. "He did say, 'What are you looking at?' And I said, 'Nothing."' Wall said he went to the Wal-Mart\ to get dog biscuits and deodorant. When he woke up, he was at the hospital in ICU. "They almost lost me twice," said Wall. "They took the paddles to me two times. I was read my last rites." He said he went from being part of the welcoming committee at his assisted living facility before the attack, to needing a walker to get around after the attack. Now, a nurse to checks on him every two hours, and he's on a liquid diet. He said the worst thing was being in ICU and finding out his service dog, Gus, died. "He was my everything; we did everything together," he said. Gus was in Wall's car when the attack happened. |
(White) women say they were assaulted, attacked with piece of concrete (by black female) during carjacking KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An attack on two women has a neighborhood west of the Country Club Plaza on edge. A brutal beating and car theft could have turned out much worse than it did, if not for help from some good Samaritans. Samantha Nofsinger-Smith said she drove her friend home from work Thursday night. The two got out of the car so Samantha’s friend could show her the courtyard of this building, and that’s when she says they were attacked by three women. “The girls didn’t seem like they were coming to attack us, until, it’s just snapped, they just snapped and it was terrifying,” Samantha said. She said she didn’t think anything when a woman walked up to her and her friend Jamie asking for a cell phone and gas money. But it quickly became clear, there was something bad about to happen. “I heard Jamie scream and her hair I saw her head yank back. They grabbed her hair and they started punching her. She hit the floor really hard,” Samantha said. “They were kicking her, punching her.” That’s when Samantha says another woman picked up a large piece of concrete and threw it at her, knocking her to the ground. Rajanae M. Walker, 17, is currently charged with one count of accessory to robbery. According to court documents, she waived her Miranda Rights and spoke with police. She said she needed a car to see her 14-year-old brother, and “took one from a white lady near the Plaza.” - (Black-on-white) |

(White) Norfolk police officer charged in shooting death of mentally ill black man released on bond Officer Michael Carlton Edington Jr. was booked Friday on the voluntary manslaughter charge handed down by a special grand jury in the shooting death of David Latham. He was booked by the Norfolk Sheriff's Office and released on a personal recognizance bond, said sheriff's Capt. Joseph Baron. He was not required to post a cash bond. Norfolk police union representatives said Friday they and the city's officers are following the case closely, but they do not believe the indictment will have much bearing on their police work. "They are going to do their jobs the way they are supposed to do it," said Mike McKenna, a former Norfolk police officer and a national representative of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers. "It's the same old story. I don't know what the facts are, and the truth will come out in court." Edington's father, Michael Edington, is also an officer, McKenna said. He is listed as a sergeant in city employment records. A grand jury is not a judge and jury, McKenna said; Edington, 25, is innocent until proved guilty. |

After guilty verdict in second murder trial, (black) defendant attacks officer and spits on prosecutor A jury once again found Damien Inman guilty of the robbery, murder and kidnapping of 75-year-old Mary Alice Stutts in Dillon in 2009. Jurors began deliberations at 6 p.m. Wednesday and reached a verdict around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. A jury convicted Inman in 2010 in this same case and sentenced him to life without the possibility of parole. But the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed the conviction and ordered Inman a new trial last year saying the Circuit Court improperly granted a motion and committed a legal error by denying Inman his right to challenge a juror during jury selection in that 2010 trial. After the verdict was announced Thursday, there was a scuffle between Inman, officers and a prosecutor. Inman swung at an officer and was taken down by other officers. His sister somehow made her way past officers to get to Inman and was arrested. Inman then spat on Deputy Solicitor Kernard Redmond and Dillon County Sheriff Major Hulon. A deputy received minor injuries from being cut by the handcuffs in the struggle to restrain Inman. Inman and two other teenagers went to Stutts' home on August 17, 2009 asking for a drink of water. Stutts directed the teens to the outside faucet. "She tried to help three men with water on a hot day. And what did she get in return for that? Death, a brutal senseless death," said Daniel. The teens hit Stutts with a gun and threw her in the trunk of her car, Daniel said. He added they drove around in Stutts' car with her screaming for help in the trunk. The teens turned up the volume of the radio to drown out Stutts' cries for help, Daniel said. He said they killed her and left her body on a dirt road in Dillon County. - (Black-on-white) |

A tragic tale of 2 families that ended with molestation and murder Lisa Scheetz and her three daughters were frequent visitors at Leeton and Donna Thomas' home, just a five-minute walk around a corner from the home the Scheetzes lived in on Spring Valley Road in a rural area of East Drumore Township. Social media accounts show the two families' children sitting together on a sofa. In a few photos, Lisa Scheetz, 44, is seen hugging one of the Thomases' sons, who she calls "my little dimple dumpling," during a breakfast out at a restaurant. In another photo on Mrs. Thomas' Facebook account, one of the Scheetz daughters, in her pajamas, is curled up with a pillow. But by 2014, the families' friendship came to an end, when Scheetz told police that two of her daughters had told her that Leeton Thomas had sexual contact with them. Thomas was charged with felony sexual molestation charges, and released on $5,000 bail. Early Thursday morning, Thomas broke into the Scheetzes' basement apartment and stabbed Lisa and her oldest daughter, Hailey, 16, to death and critically injured Scheetz's 15-year-old daughter. Authorities say that Thomas killed them in retaliation or to silence them for accusing him of sex crimes. Thomas, whose nickname is "Pie" and who will be 38 Saturday, came to Lancaster from Jamaica, where he and his wife met, said Donna Thomas' grandmother, Beulah Absher, of Quarryville. The two have three children and also were raising a child from Donna Thomas' first marriage, she said. For a time, Thomas had worked as a handyman. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Man indicted in shooting of (White) cop in face A Queens grand jury has indicted the man authorities say fatally shot a young cop in the face when the officer asked to see what was in his waistband. Demetrius Blackwell, 35, will be brought to Queens Supreme Court from jail at 2 p.m. Thursday to answer to the indictment, which charges him in the murder of Police Officer Brian Moore three ways, under three separate statutes. The top murder charge, aggravated murder, accuses Blackwell of intentionally killing a police officer in the line of duty. If convicted of that charge, Blackwell would be thrown in prison for life, without the possibility of parole. That sentence would be mandatory, meaning a sentencing judge would have no option to give him less. Finally, he is charged with the attempted murder of Moore’s partner, Police Officer Erik Jansen, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the pair’s unmarked car as Moore, sitting in the passenger side in plain clothes but identifying himself as an officer, was shot through his open window.. - (Black-on-white) |

The 39-year-old Collins and his girlfriend drove to Las Vegas to meet with a man Collins knew only by first name to buy 10 pounds of marijuana, according to police. The couple apparently fell into a robbery attempt, which resulted in one of the suspects shooting Collins while he was in his car, authorities said. Collins’ girlfriend remained at the scene as the suspects fled. Collins died in his car from a gunshot wound to his chest. On May 28, police arrested Rufus Anthony Smith III, 27, on murder, conspiracy and kidnapping charges, according to the report. Authorities are still searching for the second man. - (Black-on-white) |
