Two White women thwart attempted kidnapping of baby in Sligo Creek Park by black sexual pervert who also exposed 'himself'
  SILVER SPRING, Md. - A morning stroll through a well-known Silver Spring park turned terrifying for a nine-month-old girl, and her nanny. Around 10 a.m. the infant and her caretaker were relaxing at a playground in Sligo Creek Park. While standing near the swings, police say, Raynard Holmes, 20, approached the nanny and asked, "Do you know what kind of animals you are?" Confused and troubled by the strange question, the nanny picked-up the baby in one hand and pushed the stroller in the other, but Holmes reportedly followed. Holmes became angry and aggressive, and pried the stroller straight from the nanny's hands while repeatedly yelling, "Give me the baby!" The nanny replied, "no", but Holmes refused to relinquish. About that time, longtime friends and daily walking companions, Trish Bunn and Liz Ranasinghe, stumbled upon the midday kidnapping attempt. They were stunned by the sight. "We saw this young lady, who was obviously distraught, holding onto a baby," Bunn remarked. "She was pointing at a man who was off to the side." In what can only be described as an act of gallant goodwill, Bunn and Ranasinghe confronted Holmes, who reportedly asked, "How do I get out of here?" The duo distracted the 20-year-old with a long-winded answer, giving the nanny and child enough time to run away. "He exposed himself to us, and that wasn't the most pleasant thing to see, but then he just turned around and took-off. I was glad about that," Bunn added. Bunn then grabbed her cell phone and dialed 911. Responding officers quickly apprehended Holmes about half-a-mile away with his shirt over-his-head, pants loose and zipper undone. - (Black-on-white) |
OMAHA, Neb. -- A second man has been arrested on suspicion of playing a role in the September fatal shooting of an Omaha jewelry store owner during a botched robbery. Authorities said Wednesday that 20-year-old Christopher Hicks is being held on suspicion of receiving stolen property, violation of probation and felony criminal conspiracy. Police have not said what role Hicks is believed to have played in the Sept. 17 shooting death of 71-year-old James Minshall Sr. Another man, 18-year-old Milton Dortch Jr., pleaded not guilty last month to first-degree murder and weapons charges in Minshall's death. Police say Dortch told officers he shot Minshall three times at his store, JR's Jewelry & Gifts. - (Black-on-white)
FAIRFIELD, Calif. —A convicted felon, with a lawyer by his side, turned himself in to Fairfield police after an arrest warrant was issued for the robbery of an elderly woman's home, police said. Darnell Underwood, 42, of Fairfield, knew he was wanted and walked into the police department to turn himself in. On Sept. 12, an 82-year-old Fairfield woman walked out to her garage when Underwood forced his way into her house. Underwood hit the woman in the head with a handgun, which knocked her to the ground. He then handcuffed her to a chair, searched the home for valuable and left the house.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 27-year-old man faces 30 years in prison after he was convicted Wednesday afternoon of two counts of sexual battery, state attorneys said. Roshad Foster showed up at the home of the victim, who was an acquaintance, uninvited in March 2011. At first the woman spoke to Foster through a closed window. State attorneys said Foster left the home, but returned minutes later to speak with the woman again. This time the woman cracked open the front door and Foster forced his way inside. Foster then sexually assaulted her, state attorneys said. The woman struggled to fight back and repeatedly asked Foster to stop. She was eventually able to break away and run to a neighbor's home. 
JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. -- Police in Johnston County say an alleged sexual assault was posted on social media. Smithfield police have arrested 28-year-old Travis Graham and 23-year-old Juan Saunders. Graham is charged with first-degree rape. Saunders is charged with felony conspiracy to commit rape. Police say a 26-year-old woman told investigators the rape occurred at a birthday party on Sept. 5. The incident allegedly happened after everyone had left the party except for three men. The victim reported the incident after finding images of the sexual assault on a social media site. Police say the victim was drunk, and didn't realize she'd been assaulted until she saw the images on the internet. Police are looking for a third suspect.

ANAHEIM — A 29-year-old Orange County murder suspect died late Monday in a single-vehicle crash after a pursuit, officials said. Santa Ana police officers were in pursuit of a white Chevrolet Tahoe when it plowed into a retaining wall and caught fire. Investigators believe the driver intentionally drove into the wall as the vehicle was accelerated and the driver failed to brake immediately prior to the impact. Police have arrested a man in connection to a rape in Garland. Officers believe Calvin Anthony Lester, 29, threatened the woman's life, raped her, then took her money and her debit card. The attack happened about a month ago in the area of Northwest Highway and Saturn Road. Police released surveillance video from the Wells Fargo ATM of Lester facing directly in front of the camera while he tries to get money out of the victim's account.
Prosecutors expect to file charges soon against a suspect in four break-ins and a sexual assault near the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus. The District Attorney's Office was gathering information and preparing formal charges against the suspect, Nelly Makalin. Police were piecing together the crimes and trying to determine why it took so long for word of them to reach students who might have been in jeopardy while the suspect was loose. Two women and a man, all believed to be UWSP students, reported that they awoke early Friday morning to find a man staring at them in their bedrooms. Two of the three were able to scare the man away but the third was sexually assaulted by the man. A fourth person also reported a break-in Friday.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - A video released Wednesday shows exactly what happened when a hospital patient attacked nurses over the weekend at St. John's Hospital. Police say 68-year-old Charles Emmett Logan, of St. Paul, died after being handcuffed by police following the attack on Sunday. Authorities are still investigating what caused his death. In the video, released by the Maplewood Police Department, Logan can be seen running through the nurse's station wielding a metal pole. He then hoists the pole over his head and begins hitting nearby nurses who are attempting to flee the scene. According to police, Logan had been hospitalized with episodes of confusion. Around 2 a.m., he assaulted four nurses and then fled the building. The nurses who were assaulted include a 40-year-old from Wyoming, Minn., a 22-year-old from Brooklyn Park, a 32-year-old from Lino Lakes and a 30-year-old from Hudson, Wis. One nurse suffered a collapse lung in the incident and another fractured her wrist -- others had cuts and bruises. After Logan fled the building, police found him three blocks away and ordered him to drop the pole. Logan refused. Police attempted to deploy a Taser device on him but it wasn't effective. Three officers eventually wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him. Moments later, Logan was unresponsive and taken back to St. John's Hospital. He was later pronounced dead. Before the attack, medical staff told police he was suffering from paranoia.

A first date took a turn for the worse when a man arrived at a church parking lot to meet a woman he'd met online and was robbed. 21-year-old Hunter Walls, of Antioch, drove to Hannaway Church in Columbia last Thursday night to meet the woman he'd connected with on the website MeetMe.com. Walls told police he got out of his car and stood in the parking lot waiting for the 22-year-old woman who identified herself as "Megan" online. He said that's when two males jumped out from behind bushes on the side of the church and robbed him. One of the males punched Walls in the face and the other held one hand under his shirt as if he had a gun. Walls fell to the ground and eventually handed over cash and a cell phone before they fled on foot. He sustained a chipped tooth and some bruising to his face during the attack. Walls reported he believes “Megan” was working with the men when he was robbed. The profile lists her as a 22-year-old white female. Police describe one of the suspects as a black male, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall. The other suspect is a Hispanic male, also around 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a thin mustache.
