Brevard daycare employee accused of child abuse An employee at Woodlake Child Development Center on Palm Bay Road was arrested after Palm Bay police say she abused a child in her care. At about 4 p.m. Friday, Carolyn Philogene-Hylton, 59, told her supervisors a 4-year-old child had suffered a bump on his head after falling. When his father came to pick him up, he looked at the bump and found it was a gash that was still bleeding. He took his son to a hospital and a doctor told him the gash required stitches, but because of a time delay, they would only be able to staple the wound and the risk of infection was increased. Police determined the boy was hurt at about 9:30 Friday morning. The owner of the daycare watched video of the classroom and found out Philogene-Hylton took the boy into a bathroom and closed the door. After several minutes, the door opened and the boy had a bandage on the back of his head. She didn't report the injury to senior staff members and prevented the boy from getting medical attention. |

Black teen won’t go to trial for beating after White elderly victim dies CLARKSDALE, Miss. — The teen accused of beating an elderly Clarksdale woman will not go to trial due to her death. Shirley Gordon, the only witness prosecutors had, died last December at age 79, and she’s the only witness to the crime and the only one that could identify Edward Malane, Jr. as her attacker. Shirley Gordon never got the chance to see Malane stand trial for assaulting her, and after her death, a Coahoma County Circuit Court judge tossed the case out of court with an order of nolle prosequi, meaning “we shall no longer prosecute.” “It was kind of a shock to me. It said that it had been dismissed June 6th. And my heart hurt because I felt like an injustice had been done to my mom,” Gordon’s daughter, Tina Wilbanks, said. Wilbank’s is relieved Malane will serve 20 years for kidnapping and assaulting a 4-year-old boy in Tunica County while out on a reduced bond. - (Black-on-white) |

The attorney general's office has credible evidence against Isaac Sanders, East Stroudsburg University's former vice president for advancement, but it has failed to launch a criminal probe while it is defending the university and its administrators from a civil lawsuit filed by the students, said their lawyer, Albert R. Murray Jr. The lawsuit said Sanders, who is black, targeted emotionally fragile young black men from broken homes who looked to Sanders as a father figure or mentor. He dangled scholarships and campus jobs, then either pressured students for sex or physically attacked them to commit sexual assaults, said the suit, which also alleged Sanders misappropriated university funds. |
