9/12/98 update |
The original AP clip seems to have disappeared,
but here are some later ones reporting on this Nobel-winning Global statesman's itinerary of reaping honorary degrees, etc... * 11 September MAURITIUS (ANC news) Port Louis - President Nelson Mandela on Friday criticised hypocritical western nations which preached democracy, but whose citizens were denied basic services and went hungry... Scores of flag-waving school children waited in a light drizzle to greet Mandela, but declined to join him in singing "twinkle, twinkle little star". * Health Minister Nkosazana Zuma said President Nelson Mandela would on October 9 deliver an address to highlight the Aids problem and to urge the involvement of all South Africans fighting the disease. * WASHINGTON, DC (Herald) White House staff, `backs against wall,' defend chief executive ...But the day brought new indications that the President is losing some of the leverage of his office with the Congress. In meetings with the White House staff, some Democratic and Republican members of Congress balked at the President's requests on scheduling a ceremony for South African President Nelson Mandela, who is to receive a congressional medal later this month. A White House staff official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the Senate and House members had paid no attention to the administration's request for a specific time for the ceremony. ``We feel impotent,'' the White House official said. ``We feel afraid to speak up because we fear p------ off members of Congress. The attitude there is that he [the President] is a fraud. That's what it has come down to.'' * (Toronto Star) In meetings with the White House staff, some Democratic and Republican members of Congress balked at the president's requests on scheduling a ceremony for South African President Nelson Mandela, who later this month is to receive a Congressional Medal of Honour. [there it is again, a "Congressional Medal of Honour"!, but it does seem to be the foreign press that have it confused...] A White House staff official, speaking on the condition of anonymity,
said that the Senate and House members paid no attention to the administration's
request for a specific morning time to hold the ceremony.

Farm killings highlighted the government's failure to protect its citizens
and its inability to accept the responsibilities of power, National Party
leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk told the Free State farming community on
Tuesday.
"South African governance has deteriorated so drastically under the ANC's (African National Congress) leadership that the primary function of government, the protection of the safety and security of its citizens, has ground to a precipitous halt," he said. Addressing farmers in Clocolan and Koppies, he said the government must admit direct responsibility for the deaths caused by its "criminal apathy". "Their constant refusal to act, even to immediately condemn the atrocious violence that has been visited on our farmers, their families, and labourers, is indicative of the inability and unwillingness of the ANC to accept the responsibilities of power." He criticised the government for repeated talkshops that failed to deliver results. Van Schalkwyk accused President Nelson Mandela of giving higher priority to his international agenda, such as the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, than his citizens' needs. "The message from the Office of the President is clear: his international commitments mean more to him than the desparate cries of his own people." On the proposed summit on farm killings, he said the NP would lobby for a rebate for all security costs incurred by farmers for their self-protection. "Citizens should not be forced to pay with either their money or their lives for the ANC government's ineptitude," he said. The NP would also continue to call for a return to the farm commando system, he said. "The summit in October cannot be allowed to
be just another talkshop. The government has the power to stop these horrific
deeds and it must be made to act."
