(Black) Man convicted in 1985 murder of (White) LAPD detective granted parole, outraging police union A state review board has granted parole to the man who planned the assassination of a Los Angeles police detective more than 30 years ago in front of his 6-year-old son in the San Fernando Valley, prompting outrage from law enforcement. Voltaire Williams was one of six men connected to the ambush killing of Detective Thomas C. Williams — no relation — in a hail of machine gun fire in front of a Canoga Park church school on Halloween 1985. He was convicted in 1989 of conspiracy in the plot to kill the 42-year-old detective and acquitted of a first-degree murder charge. The board’s action brought a swift rebuke Wednesday from the union that represents Los Angeles police. “It is outrageous that the Parole Board has once again granted parole to Voltaire Williams who helped orchestrate the murder of LAPD Detective Thomas Williams in front of his son,” according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Protective League. “Detective Williams was assassinated because he did his job. The Parole Board’s decision is an affront to every peace officer who risks their lives to protect others on a daily basis.” - (Black-on-white) |

And I said ‘no…'” The other customer moved out of the way as the two struggled over the money. After an extensive six-month investigation, George Nathaniel Stang, 26, of Bloomington, is charged with institutional criminal mischief in connection with the vandalism that occurred at St. David's Episcopal Church last year. The investigation began on November 13, 2016 when Reverend Kelsey Hutto called police to report that the phrase “HEIL TRUMP” was painted on the north wall of the building, and a swastika and gay slur were on the west side. She said she found out about the graffiti from Stang who is the organist at the church. Officers obtained a search warrant for Stang’s detailed phone records and determined he was in the area of the church from 10:38 p.m. and 10:44 p.m. on the night the vandalism occurred. But when an officer questioned Stang again on April 28, 2017, he admitted to vandalizing the church. Stang said he wanted to “mobilize a movement” after being disappointed in and fearful of the election results. He said his actions were not motivated by “anti-Christian or anti-gay” feelings; rather, they were strictly out of fear. The Brown County Prosecutor’s Office says they do not believe the crime was motivated by hate, which is why he will not be charged with a hate crime. |

Black Sports: Third player in Vanderbilt rape case headed to trial Brandon Banks, one of four men charged in the rape of an unconscious woman at Vanderbilt University nearly four years ago, was in court Thursday for a motions hearing, further signaling his case is heading toward trial instead of a plea deal. Banks, 23, and his lawyer, Mark Scruggs, are arguing that some case evidence should not be used against him in trial. Though a plea agreement could be reached at anytime, the motions indicate ongoing preparation for the trial. That's set for June 19. Police say that on June 23, 2013, four then-football players at Vanderbilt raped an unconscious woman in a dorm on campus. The case put Vanderbilt in the national spotlight scrutinizing how colleges respond to sexual assault, and a federal Department of Education investigation was launched. Since then, two of the players have been convicted: Brandon Vandenburg, whom the woman was dating, was sentenced to 17 years in prison; and Cory Batey was sentenced to 15 years. |

Longtime Mexican fugitive ordered held without bond on murder, rape charges A former Southwest Side auto mechanic who eluded authorities for nearly two decades after jumping bail in a sex assault case was ordered held Thursday without bond. Fidel Urbina, 41, was flown back to Chicago this week after his capture in Mexico in September in a tiny village in a remote part of the border state of Chihuahua. Assistant State's Attorney Craig Taczy said Urbina had offered a ride home to a woman who worked in a tavern in March 1998 but instead forced her into a car at knifepoint and repeatedly raped her — first in the car and then in an apartment. She escaped and called police after the attacker fell asleep. In October 1998, while that case was still pending, Gabriella Torres brought her car to be repaired at the garage where Urbina worked, according to Chicago police. The next day, police found a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina on fire in an alley in the 2300 block of West 50th Street, prosecutors said. Inside the trunk, they found Torres' body, bound with wire and duct tape and severely burned, Taczy said. Nearby was Torres' car, a 1985 Oldsmobile. Prosecutors said fingerprints matching Urbina's were found in or on her car. In addition, semen found in Torres' body matched Urbina's DNA profile, prosecutors said. |

Iowa: Black-hispanic assassinated White deputy and wounded another during escape from transport from court back to jail Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker rushed to the jail’s secure inmate entrance Monday morning to see two of his men wounded on the floor. It had been breached from the inside. He found two deputies shot — one of them died soon after. Danker watched as the deputies received first aid from jail nurses and medics. He saw a broken garage door, busted by the van used to transport inmates. He saw blood. “It’s just a shocking scene to walk into,” Danker said just a few hours later. A whirlwind pursuit of an escaped inmate across state lines on Monday morning that lasted less than 30 minutes ended with the man being captured, but heartbreak for the slain deputy’s family and the law enforcement family. Mark Burbridge, 43, a 12-year veteran, died roughly an hour after he was shot. Danker said the loss of Burbridge was something that law enforcement officers hope they never have to experience. “We lost one officer today,” Danker said. “Excellent man. We’re going to miss him.” Burbridge had worked on road patrol, investigations and, most recently, court security. “(He) always was happy, jovial,” Danker said. “He was a good deputy.” Another deputy, Pat Morgan, 59, a 10-year department veteran, also was injured in the shooting, which occurred about 10:55 a.m. Morgan was shot in the lower torso, an injury that officials said was not life-threatening. The shooting occurred after the two deputies drove inmate Wesley Correa-Carmenaty, 24, back to jail from the courthouse. Correa-Carmenaty had just been sentenced as part of a plea deal to 45 years in prison with no possibility of parole for 29½ years, for voluntary manslaughter in the 2016 killing of Anthony J. Walker. In court, he had acted cold and spoke flatly, according to Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber. Speaking through a Spanish translator, Correa-Carmenaty directed his words toward his victim’s family: “He died because he was an idiot.” The victim’s mother fled from the room in tears. - (Black-on-white) |
