“All of a sudden two whacks on the back of my head,” recalled Harkins, who taught in Long Island public schools for 30 years.
“At first I thought he hit me with his hands,” the lifelong New Yorker said. “But the Port Authority detective said, ‘No, he had two heavy pieces of metal, one in each hand.’”
“It bled profusely,” said Harkins, who used paper towels to blot the wound while waiting for an ambulance.
She never saw his face but watched as he “skipped away,” she said. A Good Samaritan who witnessed the attack described what she saw to police, said Harkins.
Cops believe recidivist Edwin Wright was the attacker and are still looking for him, police sources said.
Wright, 39, whose last known address was a Bowery homeless shelter and who has five prior arrests, was already wanted on a bench warrant for a random November assault that happened nearby, police sources said.
That time, the 5-foot-11, 210-pound Wright allegedly punched a 15-year-old girl in the back of the neck at Broadway and John Street as she walked to school around 8 a.m. Nov. 21, police sources said.
Wright was charged with two counts of assault, one count of attempted assault and one count of harassment, according to a criminal complaint.
But Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Kacie Lally freed him on supervised release.
Wright never showed up for his May 6 court hearing in the case, leading to an arrest warrant, officials said.
While he was on the street, he allegedly committed another assault, sucker-punching a 54-year-old stranger in the back of the head around 8:30 a.m. on March 10 at William and Fulton streets, cops said.
When the victim tried to stand up, Wright allegedly socked him in the face several times, officials said. He was again freed on supervised release.

Video reviewed by investigators allegedly showed Arius Williams launching little Montrell Williams into the air and throwing him into the river just before midnight May 10, the day he went missing, ADA Astrid Borgstedt said in Bronx Criminal Court on Thursday.

Another bystander was wounded but survived.
A jury convicted Robinson of murder and other charges in 2023 and he was later sentenced to 90 years in prison.

The Peterson family has been told that after White pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree murder Monday, he most likely will be committed to the State Hospital in St. Peter rather than being sentenced to prison because of the results of three different mental evaluations.
Judge Juan Hoyos will make the final determination after a hearing on Friday.
The case has dragged on in the courts since the August 2022 crime.
"At the state hospital, there is no minimum timeframe for which we know he will be there, so there's no security for us," Janet Peterson said. "Ryan's wife is feeling so unsafe that she has moved out of the country because of how this is going to go."
Janet is especially upset that the evaluations of White's mental state when he committed the crime were not done until more than a year after the stabbing.
The Petersons say they will always remember Ryan as a hilarious, loving, IT genius.
"I think the best way to describe him is just incredibly supportive," Kurt Peterson said.
But they also say the court case has only added more weight to their trauma.
Hailey Hosford had stepped out of a rental car at the Retreat at Sawgrass Village in Sunrise, Fla., when she spotted an armed Jackson Sagesse begin to approach her just after 1:30 a.m. on May 28.
Hosford, 27, attempted to escape by jumping back into the rear passenger side of the car, but the 280-pound thug allegedly ripped open the door, according to an arrest affidavit viewed by The Post.
A physical altercation broke out between Hosford and Sagesse and the suspect was captured on security camera making a repeated stabbing motion into the vehicle, police said.
Sagesse got out of the car and was confronted by Hosford’s male friend, who had returned from picking up some items from his apartment.
Police found Hosford, who was unresponsive, inside the car. She had suffered multiple stab wounds to her neck and throat and was pronounced dead at 2:01 a.m.
